Zhannat is an award-winning writer/director and producer from Kazakhstan with a background in business administration and marketing. After working in corporate sector for couple of years, in 2011 Zhannat shifted to filmmaking, entering the film industry as a set photographer.
Her first short film The White Orchid Hotel premiered at the prestigious cinematography festival – Camerimage and got sold to Shorts International.
Her graduation film End of Season premiered at the 71st Cannes Film Festival (Cinefondation). The film co-stars renowned Russian actress Rosa Khairullina and Kazakh actor Dulyga Akmolda. In 2019 the film won Most Promising Director Award at the Tel-Aviv International Student Film Festival, and Best Cinematography Award at FilmschoolFest Munich. Currently in a festival circuit.
In 2019 Zhannat participated in Bela Tarr’s directing residency, where she developed and shot a short film Paola Makes a Wish, which premiered at the 72nd Locarno Film Festival as a part of collective film Under the God, produced by Locarno Film Festival, CISA and Ticino Film Commission.
Her most recent short film History of Civilisations is currently in post-production.
Zhannat's first feature project "Mother Tongue" was selected for Asian Project Market (Busan International Film Festival), where it won ARTE's FRANCE Arte Kino International award.
Zhannat holds Bachelor degree in Business Administration (KIMEP, Kazakhstan), Masters degree in Marketing (ESIC, Spain) and Master in Arts degree in Filmmaking (London Film School, UK). She is also Berlinale Talents Alumni.
